Bishr ibn al-Ḥārith said: “The people of the Hereafter are three types: the worshiper, the ascetic, and the veracious intimate. The worshiper serves Allah while still entangled in worldly attachments; the ascetic serves Him by forsaking those attachments; and the veracious intimate serves Him in contentment and full concurrence—if Allah shows him that taking a share of this world is His will, he takes it, and if He shows him that leaving it is His will, he leaves it.”
If Allah and His Messenger ﷺ are on one side, beware of standing on the other, for that leads to mushāqqa and muḥāda—active opposition and defiance. This is their very root and etymology: mushāqqa means to be in one shaqq (flank) while the opponent is in another; muḥāda means to be on one boundary while the opponent is on a different boundary.
Do not treat this lightly, for its beginnings drag one inexorably to its end, and a little of it invites a great deal of it.
Therefore stand with the side upon which Allah and His Messenger ﷺ stand, even if all people are on the opposite side. The consequences of that choice are the most praiseworthy and the best of outcomes, and nothing is more beneficial to a servant in his worldly life before the Hereafter.
Most people, however, are found on the other side—especially when desire or fear grows strong. At such times you will scarcely find anyone on the side of Allah and His Messenger. Rather, people will deem him lacking in sense and having made a poor choice for himself; they may even accuse him of madness. This is an inheritance from the enemies of the messengers, for they called the messengers mad when the latter stood on one side and the people on another.
Whoever steels himself for this path must possess deep, unwavering knowledge of what the Messenger brought so that it becomes certain for him, admitting no doubt. He must show complete patience toward the enmity of his foes and the blame of his critics. None of that is attainable without a powerful yearning for Allah and the Hereafter—such that the Hereafter is dearer to him than this world, preferred over it, and Allah and His Messenger ﷺ are dearer to him than all else.
