and take for yourself a light by which you may shine on the Day when people divide the lights according to their ranks.

Another version:
“If my affliction is what Your mercy requires, then I am satisfied with the wretchedness of my condition, and let wasting sickness be permitted to my body.
I have offered You my very soul, seeking no price for it except Your good pleasure—and my poverty itself is payment enough. (1)

Another:
“I pine at the edges of the day out of yearning, and at night passion calls to me and I respond.” (2)

Another:
“If love is inescapable, then it is sheer weakness to love anyone but the Beautiful One.” (3)

Another:
“Had I been striving for a hastily passing livelihood, a fraction of what I already endure would have sufficed me;
but I am striving for an everlasting kingdom—alas for me if I do not attain it.” (4)

• O you who belong to the people of insight! Have you come to know the value of your own soul? The whole cosmos was created for your sake.

(1) The two couplets are cited in Al-Mudhish, p. 423, and in Badaʾiʿ al-Fawaʾid, 3/1177.
