—all of that and whatever had been altered.
In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr that he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say:
‘Take the Qur’an from four: from Ibn Umm ʿAbd’—and he began with him—‘Muʿādh ibn Jabal, Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, and Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah.’ ”
I say: These reports show that ʿAbd Allāh [ibn Masʿūd] compiled the Qur’an during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah—blessings and peace be upon him—contrary to what was mentioned earlier; and Allah knows best.
Abū Bakr al-Anbārī stated in his book al-Radd:
Muhammad ibn Shahriyār narrated to us, Ḥusayn ibn al-Aswad narrated to us, Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us, from Abū Bakr, from Abū Isḥāq, who said that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said:
“I recited from the very mouth of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—seventy-two or seventy-three sūrahs, and I recited to him from al-Baqarah up to Allah’s words, ‘Indeed, Allah loves those who repent constantly and loves those who purify themselves’ [2:222].”
Abū Isḥāq added: ʿAbd Allāh learned the remainder of the Qur’an from Mujammiʿ ibn Ḥārithah al-Anṣārī.
I say: If this is authentic, it invalidates the consensus cited by Yazīd ibn Hārūn, and for that reason al-Qāḍī Abū Bakr al-Anbārī did not mention it.
Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Khūzī narrated to me, saying: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us, Mālik ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated from Abū Isḥāq who said: I asked al-Aswad, “What was ʿAbd Allāh’s practice regarding Sūrat al-Aʿrāf?”
He replied, “He did not know it until he arrived in Kūfah.”
He [al-Aswad] also said—and some scholars have affirmed—that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, may Allah have mercy on him, died before learning the two Muʿawwidhatayn; for that reason they were not found in his Muṣḥaf. Other explanations have been offered, and these will be clarified at the end of the book under ‘The Two Muʿawwidhatayn,’ if Allah Most High wills.
Abū Bakr [al-Anbārī] said: The report that Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā narrated to us—Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us, ʿUmar ibn Hārūn al-Khurāsānī narrated from Rabīʿah ibn ʿUthmān from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī—that reads: “Among those who completed the Qur’an while the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was still alive were ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd,” is not authentic according to the scholars. It is the isolated statement of Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb; it is mursal and therefore neither accepted as evidence nor relied upon.
