Similar to the wording reported from Muʿādh through the narration of ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad—and in that version an additional phrase appears: that the true aspiration of the scholars is deep understanding, whereas the aspiration of the foolish is mere narration. The report is authentically preserved as a Companion-statement (mawqūf), and that is preferable to the version that elevates it to a Prophetic report, for ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad is not a reliable authority in hadith.
How fine are the following verses, composed in praise of knowledge, and in honor of the Noble Book and the radiant Sunnah:
All branches of learning, however splendid their beauties,
are crowned by that which makes faith itself obligatory.
It is the Mighty Book—Allah Himself preserves it—
and next to it is knowledge that lifts every sorrow.
Know, then, the hadith of the Chosen One, for through it
the light of prophethood laid down law and noble conduct.
After this come sciences without limit—
choose for yourself, O seeker, the path you prefer.
Knowledge is a treasure found in its veins;
search, O student, and pore over the books.
Recite with understanding the Book of Allah; within it
all sciences are contained—ponder it and behold wonders.
Read, guided, the sayings of the Chosen One, and ask
your Lord for what you desire; He will grant your need.
Whoever tastes the sweetness of the science of religion rejoices;
when he gains more, he cries out, “What delight!”

The meaning of the Prophet’s words, peace and blessings be upon him:
“This Qur’an was revealed on seven modes; recite of it whatever is easy for you.”
Muslim narrates from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was beside the pool of the Banū Ghifār when Gabriel, upon him be peace, came and said, “Allah commands you to have your community recite the Qur’an on one mode.” He replied, “I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness; my community will not be able to bear that.”
Gabriel came to him a second time and said, “Allah commands you to have your community recite the Qur’an on two modes.” He answered, “I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness; my community will not be able to bear that.”
Then he came a third time and said, “Allah commands you to have them recite the Qur’an on three modes.” He replied, “I ask Allah for His pardon and His forgiveness; my community will not be able to bear that.”
Gabriel came a fourth time and said, “Allah commands you …”
