Twelfth: His Reluctance to Issue Fatwas in the Latter Part of His Life
In the final years of his life the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—became extremely wary of issuing legal opinions and kept his distance from them. Whenever someone pressed him for an answer he would say, “I do not wish to shoulder anything in my conscience; the scholars say such-and-such.”
When asked why, he replied, “A person remains in wellbeing so long as he is not tested; being asked is a test, for you are speaking about Allah yet you do not know whether you have attained Allah’s ruling or not. Anything for which there is no decisive text from the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ must therefore be approached with caution.”
He would often quote the poet’s words (1):
When you have mastered a matter, then speak about it;
But never speak concerning that of which you are ignorant.
