Fourth: His Determination in the Pursuit of Knowledge
The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—possessed an extraordinary zeal for learning; he never let a single point he had studied pass without full comprehension and careful verification, even when that demanded exhausting effort and countless hours. The following incident, narrated by the Shaykh himself, bears this out:
“I came to my teacher for my regular reading. He explained the lesson as usual, yet his explanation did not satisfy me as it normally did, nor did it quench my thirst for understanding. I left him still sensing the need to remove certain ambiguities and clarify some problematic passages. It was midday, so I gathered my books and references and read until the late-afternoon prayer, but my need was still unmet. I resumed until sunset, yet still had not finished. My servant then lit a few sticks of firewood so that I could read by their light—as students often do—and I kept on reading, sipping green tea whenever fatigue or lethargy set in, while the servant sat beside me feeding the flame. Dawn broke while I was still in my place, having risen only to perform the obligatory prayers or take a meal. When daylight spread, I had completed my lesson, the confusion had vanished, and I found this portion of the text as lucid and intelligible as any other.”
This is how he dealt with any difficulty that arose! Added to that were the long nights he spent tracking every commentator’s statement on the book he was studying, determined to gather all that had ever been said on each issue or chapter.
Fifth: The Abundance and Breadth of His Knowledge
Allah endowed the Shaykh—may He have mercy on him—with exceptional intelligence, a rare memory, and lofty aspiration, and he harnessed all of these gifts in acquiring and compiling knowledge across its many disciplines
