He then cited (1) the hadith narrated by al-Zuhrī from Sālim, from his father: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed tamattu‘,” continuing the hadith. He also cited al-Zuhrī’s statement: “‘Urwah also narrated to me from ‘Ā’ishah a report like that of Sālim from his father” (2). He said (3): This is among the most authentic hadiths on earth. It is narrated by al-Zuhrī—the most knowledgeable scholar of his time concerning the Sunnah—from Sālim, from his father, and is among the most authentic reports of Ibn ‘Umar and ‘Ā’ishah.
It is established from ‘Ā’ishah in the two Sahīhs (4) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed ‘umrah four times, the fourth together with his Hajj. By scholarly agreement, he did not perform ‘umrah after Hajj. He must therefore have performed tamattu‘, either in the form of qirān (combining Hajj and ‘umrah) or as tamattu‘ in its specific sense.
It is also authentically reported that Ibn ‘Umar combined Hajj and ‘umrah and said: “This is what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did.” Al-Bukhārī narrated this in his Sahīh (5).
He said (6): As for those reported to have said that he performed Hajj alone, they are three: ‘Ā’ishah, Ibn ‘Umar, and Jābir. All three are also reported to have said that he performed tamattu‘. The reports of ‘Ā’ishah and Ibn ‘Umar that he performed tamattu‘, joining ‘umrah to Hajj, are more authentic than their reports that he performed Hajj alone (7), and whatever is authentically reported from the two of them on this matter
