Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

And Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī narrated it through Sharīk, from Zumayl (1), the client of ‘Urwah, from ‘Urwah, from ‘Ā’ishah, with a connected chain. Al-Nasā’ī said (2): Zumayl is not well known. Al-Bukhārī said (3): It is not known that Zumayl heard from ‘Urwah, nor that Sharīk (4) heard from Zumayl, and this report cannot serve as evidence.

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting and visited people, he would complete his fast without breaking it. Thus, when he visited Umm Sulaym and she brought him dates and clarified butter, he said, “Put your clarified butter back in its leather container and your dates back in their vessel, for I am fasting” (5). However, he regarded Umm Sulaym as a member of his own household. It is also authentically reported from him in the Sahīh (6): “If any of you is invited to a meal while fasting, he should say, ‘I am fasting.’”

As for the hadith narrated by Ibn Mājah and al-Tirmidhī (7) from ‘Ā’ishah, who attributed it to the Prophet: “Whoever stays with people as their guest must not observe a voluntary fast without their permission”—al-Tirmidhī said (8): This is a rejected hadith. We know of no reliable narrator who related this hadith from Hishām ibn ‘Urwah.

(1) The manuscripts read: “from Sharīk, from Zumayl.” The wording in Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī is: “from Haywah ibn Shurayh, from Ibn al-Hād, from Zumayl,” which is correct. (2) In al-Sunan al-Kubrā, following (3295). (3) In al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (3/450). (4) This is the reading in the manuscripts. Al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr reads “li-Yazīd (for Yazīd),” which is correct. (5) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (1982) from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him. (6) Narrated by Muslim (1150) from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him. (7) No. (789). Its chain of transmission includes Ayyūb ibn Wāqid, who has been criticized. Also narrated by Ibn Mājah (1763), whose chain includes Abū Bakr al-Madanī, who has likewise been criticized. See al-Da‘īfah (2713). (8) Al-Jāmi‘ (789). Al-Bukhārī made a similar statement, as recorded in al-‘Ilal al-Kabīr (p. 127).
