Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Nor did he fast the three months (1) without interruption, as some people do. He never fasted Rajab, nor did he recommend fasting it; rather, it is reported that he prohibited fasting it, as recorded by Ibn Mājah (2).

He would make a point of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays (3).

Ibn ‘Abbās said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would never leave the white days unfasted, whether at home or travelling (4).” This was recorded by al-Nasā’ī (5). He would encourage fasting these days (6).

Ibn Mas‘ūd said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast three days at the beginning of each month.” This was recorded by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasā’ī (7).

(1) Manuscripts j and ‘ayn read: “ashhur (months).” (2) No. 1743, from Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both. Its chain of transmission includes Dāwūd ibn ‘Atā’, who has been criticized. Al-Albānī graded the hadith as weak in al-Da‘īfa (4728). The prohibition against singling out Rajab for fasting is established in a report recorded by Ibn Abī Shayba (9851), from Kharasha ibn al-Hurr, who said: “I saw ‘Umar striking people’s hands during Rajab until they put them into the large bowls, saying: ‘Eat, for this is merely a month that the people of the pre-Islamic era used to venerate.’” See al-Irwā’ (4/114). (3) Narrated by Ahmad (24748), al-Tirmidhī (745), al-Nasā’ī (2361), and Ibn Mājah (1739), from ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her. Al-Tirmidhī graded it as hasan (good), while Ibn Hibbān (3643), Ibn Hajar in al-Fath (4/300), and al-Albānī in al-Irwā’ (4/105–106) graded it as sahīh (authentic). (4) This is the reading in the manuscripts. The printed edition reads: “Neither while travelling nor while at home,” which is also the wording of the hadith. (5) In al-Mujtabā (2345) and al-Kubrā (2666). Also narrated by al-Bazzār (5035). Al-Nawawī graded it as hasan in Riyād al-Sālihīn (p. 361), as did al-Albānī in al-Silsila al-Sahīha (580). (6) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (1981), from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him. (7) Abū Dāwūd (2450) and al-Nasā’ī (2368); also narrated by al-Tirmidhī (742). Ibn Khuzayma (2129), Ibn Hibbān (3641), and Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Istidhkār (3/381) graded the hadith as sahīh. Al-Tirmidhī and al-Albānī in Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (7/211) graded it as hasan.
