Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Ramadan with his eyes thickly lined with ithmid (a type of kohl) (1), but this report is not authentic. It is also reported that he said concerning ithmid: “Let the fasting person avoid it” (2), but this too is not authentic (3). Abū Dāwūd (4) said: “Yahyā ibn Ma‘īn told me: ‘It is an unacceptable hadith.’”

Section
His Practice in Voluntary Fasting

He would fast until people said, “He never stops fasting,” and refrain from fasting until people said, “He never fasts.” He never fasted an entire month except Ramadan, and in no month did he fast more than in Sha‘bān (5).

No month would pass without his fasting some of its days.

(1) Narrated by al-Hārith ibn Abī Usāma (582), Ibn Fīl in his Juz’ (Hadith Collection, p. 170), Ibn Hibbān in al-Majrūhīn (1/320), and al-Diyā’ al-Maqdisī in al-Sunan wa-l-Ahkām (3663). Ibn ‘Adī narrated a similar version in al-Kāmil (6/223). Its chain of transmission includes ‘Amr ibn Khālid al-Wāsitī, whom Ahmad and Yahyā ibn Ma‘īn declared to be a liar. Al-‘Aynī attributed the hadith in ‘Umdat al-Qārī (11/15) to Ibn Abī ‘Āsim’s Kitāb al-Siyām. (2) Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (2377) and al-Tabarānī (802), from Ma‘bad ibn Hawdha, reporting that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed the use of scented ithmid (kohl) at bedtime and said: “Let the fasting person avoid it.” Ahmad narrated it (16072) without the addition: “Let the fasting person avoid it.” Ahmad and Ibn Ma‘īn judged the hadith to be munkar (unacceptable). See al-Irwā’ (4/85), al-Silsila al-Da‘īfa (1014), and Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (2/269). (3) The passage “It is also reported that he said … is not authentic” is omitted from manuscript k. (4) Immediately after the hadith. (5) Narrated by al-Bukhārī (1969) and Muslim (1156/175), from ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her.
