Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Ishāq also said: “This has been authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ through five routes of transmission (1).”

The point is that no authentic report establishes that he ﷺ underwent cupping while fasting, nor that he prohibited a fasting person from using the tooth-stick, whether early or late in the day (2). Rather, the opposite has been reported from him (3). The following saying is also attributed to him: “Among the best practices of a fasting person is using the tooth-stick.” Ibn Mājah (4) narrated it through Mujālid, but there is weakness in the report.

(1) See al-Furū‘ (Subsidiary Rulings) by Ibn Muflih (5/7). (2) Such as the report from ‘Alī, may Allah be pleased with him, attributed to the Prophet: “When you fast, use the tooth-stick in the morning, but do not use it in the afternoon, for when a fasting person’s lips become dry, he will have light on the Day of Resurrection.” Narrated from ‘Alī, may Allah be pleased with him, by al-Bazzār (2137), al-Tabarānī (3696), and al-Dāraqutnī (2372). The hadith is weak. See al-Tanqīh (3/240), al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (2/201), al-Irwā’ (1/106), and al-Da‘īfa (401). (3) Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Were it not that I would cause hardship for my community—or for people—I would have commanded them to use the tooth-stick with every prayer.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī (887), whose wording is quoted here, and Muslim (252). (4) Narrated by Ibn Mājah (1677) and al-Dāraqutnī (2371), from ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her. (5) Narrated from ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, by Ibn Mājah (1678) and al-Tabarānī in al-Saghīr (401) and Musnad al-Shāmiyyīn (1830). The hadith’s chain of transmission is weak; its defect is Sa‘īd ibn Abī Sa‘īd al-Zubaydī, whose reliability has been criticized. See al-Tanqīh (3/249), al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (2/190), and al-Silsila al-Da‘īfa (6108).
