Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

'Amr ibn Dīnār, from 'Atā' and Tāwūs, from Ibn 'Abbās: “The Prophet ﷺ underwent cupping while in a state of ritual consecration” (1). These students of Ibn 'Abbās do not mention that he was fasting.’”

Hanbal said (2): “Abū 'Abd Allāh narrated to us: Wakī' narrated to us, from Yāsīn al-Zayyāt, from a man, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ underwent cupping in Ramadan after saying: ‘Both the person performing cupping and the one undergoing it have broken their fast.’” Abū 'Abd Allāh said: “I believe the man was Abān ibn Abī 'Ayyāsh (3),” meaning that his reports cannot be used as evidence (4).

Al-Athram said (5): “I said to Abū 'Abd Allāh: ‘Muhammad ibn Mu'āwiyah al-Naysābūrī narrated, from Abū 'Awānah, from al-Suddī, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ underwent cupping while fasting.’ He rejected this, then said: ‘Al-Suddī, from Anas?’ I replied: ‘Yes.’ He was astonished at this.”

Ahmad said: “There is more than one authentic hadith reporting his statement: ‘Both the person performing cupping and the one undergoing it have broken their fast.’”

(1) Narrated by Ahmad (3524), and graded authentic by Ibn Khuzayma (2657) and al-Hākim (1/453). These versions report it from Tāwūs alone. Ahmad (1923), al-Bukhārī (1835, 5695), and Muslim (1202) narrated it through Sufyān ibn ‘Uyayna, from ‘Amr ibn Dīnār, from both ‘Atā’ and Tāwūs, from Ibn ‘Abbās. (2) In his Su’ālāt (Questions). See al-Tawdīh (The Clarification) by Ibn al-Mulaqqin (13/300). (3) ك, ص, ج, ع read “‘Uthmān,” a corruption. The reading adopted from ق and مب is correct. Ahmad said: “Whenever Wakī‘ came to a hadith of Abān ibn Abī ‘Ayyāsh, he would say ‘a man,’ without naming him, because he considered him weak.” Al-‘Ilal (Hadith Defects), as transmitted by his son ‘Abd Allāh (2/525). (4) He also said of him: “He is matrūk al-hadīth (a transmitter whose hadith are abandoned); people have abandoned his hadith for a very long time.” Al-‘Ilal (Hadith Defects), as transmitted by his son ‘Abd Allāh (1/412). (5) See al-Tawdīh (The Clarification) by Ibn al-Mulaqqin (13/300).
