disagreement on this. No authentic report from him concerning the application of kohl is established (1).
It is authentically reported that he used the siwāk (tooth-cleaning stick) while fasting (2).
Imam Ahmad (3) reported that he would pour water over his head while fasting.
He would rinse his mouth and draw water into his nose while fasting, but he forbade those fasting from drawing water too deeply into the nose (4).
No authentic report establishes that he underwent cupping while fasting, according to Imam Ahmad. Al-Bukhārī nevertheless related this in his Sahīh (5). Ahmad said (6): “Yahyā ibn Sa'īd (7) narrated to us, reporting the words of

(2) Narrated by Ahmad (15678) and al-Tirmidhī (725). Its chain of transmission is weak because of the weakness of ‘Āsim ibn ‘Ubayd Allāh al-‘Umarī. However, the hadith “Were it not that I would cause hardship for my community” suffices in its place: the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not single out those not fasting to the exclusion of those fasting. This, together with al-barā’a al-asliyya (the presumption of original exemption), indicates that using the siwāk (tooth-cleaning stick) is recommended for those fasting both early and late in the day. See Sahīh Ibn Khuzayma (3/247) and Tamām al-Minna (p. 89).
