and fast (1). He would kiss some of his wives while fasting during Ramadan (2). He likened a fasting person’s kiss to rinsing the mouth with water (3).

As for the report narrated by Abū Dāwūd (4), from Misdaʿ ibn Yahyā, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would kiss her while fasting and suck her tongue = scholars have differed concerning this hadith. Some graded it as weak (5) because of this Misdaʿ, whose reliability is disputed. Al-Saʿdī said: “He is deviant, straying from the path.” Others graded it as good, saying: “He is trustworthy and truthful; Muslim included his narrations in his Sahīh” (6).

Its chain of transmission also includes Muhammad ibn Dīnār al-Tāhī al-Basrī, whose reliability is likewise disputed. Yahyā said: “He is weak.” In another assessment reported from him, he said: “There is nothing wrong with him.” Others said: “He is truthful.” Ibn ʿAdī said that no one but Muhammad ibn Dīnār reports the phrase “and suck her tongue”,
