with him, and he never performed ‘umrah in Rajab” (1). Likewise, all his ‘umrahs were in Dhū al-Qa‘dah, and he never performed ‘umrah in Ramadan (2).

It was not his practice to prescribe a fixed distance of travel at which a fasting person could break his fast, nor has anything authentic been reported from him on this matter. Dihyah ibn Khalīfah al-Kalbī broke his fast on a journey of three miles, saying to those who fasted: “They have turned away from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him” (3).
When the Companions set out on a journey, they would break their fast without regard to whether they had passed beyond the houses, and they stated that this was his sunnah and guidance, peace and blessings be upon him. As ‘Ubayd ibn Jabr (4) related: I boarded a boat from al-Fustāt during Ramadan with Abū Basrah al-Ghifārī, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Before he had passed beyond the houses, he called for the meal to be brought. He said, “Come closer.” I asked, “Can you not still see the houses?” Abū Basrah replied, “Do you turn away from the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?” Narrated by Abū Dāwūd and Ahmad (5).
