Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

and Abū Dāwūd (1).

‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a crier through the roads of Mecca to announce:

“Know that the charity due at the end of Ramadan is obligatory for every Muslim, male or female, free or enslaved, young or old: two mudds of wheat, or one sā‘ (2) of other food” (3).

Al-Tirmidhī said: “This is a good, singular hadith.”

Al-Dāraqutnī (4) narrated a hadith from Ibn ‘Umar stating that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, instructed ‘Amr ibn Hazm that half a sā‘ of wheat be paid as the charity due at the end of Ramadan. Its chain of transmission includes Sulaymān ibn

(1) Ahmad (23663, 23664) and Abū Dāwūd (1619, 1620). Also reported by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (5785), al-Dāraqutnī (2103, 2107, 2109, 2111, 2118), and al-Hākim (3:279), through several routes from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Tha‘laba ibn Abī Su‘ayr. This hadith’s chain of transmission has been reported in differing forms. Al-Dāraqutnī discussed these in detail in al-‘Ilal (1195), stating: “The soundest is from al-Zuhrī, from Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyab, as a mursal (disconnected) report.” Al-Bayhaqī said: “The established reports indicate that treating two mudds of wheat as equivalent occurred after the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” See Nasb al-Rāya (2:408). (2) ص reads: “sā‘.” (3) Reported by al-Tirmidhī (674) and al-Dāraqutnī (2080), through Sālim ibn Nūh, from Ibn Jurayj, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather. Sālim ibn Nūh is somewhat weak. ‘Abd al-Razzāq (5800) transmitted it differently, reporting it from Ibn Jurayj, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, as a mursal report. This version was reported by al-‘Uqaylī in al-Du‘afā’ (6:385) and al-Dāraqutnī (2081, 2082). After reporting it through several routes, al-‘Uqaylī said: “‘Abd al-Razzāq’s version is preferable.” See Tanqīh al-Tahqīq (3:112–130). (4) Nos. 2094 and 2410, through Muhammad ibn Sharhabīl al-San‘ānī, from Ibn Jurayj, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, from Nāfi‘, who related this report. Al-Dāraqutnī regarded Ibn Sharhabīl as weak in al-‘Ilal (12:343, under question 2770). See Lisān al-Mīzān (7:196).
