He would brand the zakat camels with his own hand, branding them on their ears (1).
Whenever a need arose, he would obtain zakat in advance from those liable to pay it, as when he took two years’ zakat in advance from al-‘Abbās (2).

His Practice Regarding Zakat al-Fitr
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made it obligatory for every Muslim and those he supported—young or old, male or female, free or enslaved—at one sā‘ (a measure of volume) of dates, barley, dried curds, or raisins (3).
(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (5542) and Muslim (2119), from Anas ibn Mālik.
(2) Reported by Ya‘qūb ibn Sufyān al-Fasawī in al-Ma‘rifa wa-l-Tārīkh (1:500–501) and al-Bayhaqī (4:111), from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib. Its chain is interrupted between Abū al-Bakhtarī and ‘Alī. Abū Dāwūd (1624) also reported it through al-Hakam, from Hujayya, from ‘Alī. He then followed it with a mursal report through Hushaym, from Mansūr ibn Zādhān, from al-Hakam, from al-Hasan ibn Muslim, stating that this latter version was more authentic. After mentioning its transmission routes, al-Hāfiz said in al-Fath (3:264): “In view of these transmission routes taken together, it is not unlikely that this account of al-‘Abbās’s advance payment of zakat is established.” In Sahīh al-Bukhārī (1468) and Sahīh Muslim (983), Abū Hurayra’s report concerning the Prophet’s sending ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb to collect zakat includes the statement: “As for al-‘Abbās, it is my responsibility, together with an equal amount.” May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Prophet.
(3) Reported by Mālik (773, 774), al-Bukhārī (1503, 1504, 1507, 1511, 1512), and Muslim (984), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. Also reported by al-Bukhārī (1505, 1506, 1508, 1510) and Muslim (985), from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī.
