in lamentation and wailing, or shaved his hair because of it (1).
His practice was that the deceased’s family should not burden themselves with preparing food for others. Rather, he instructed others to prepare food for them and send it to them (2). This is among the finest expressions of noble character and virtue, relieving the bereaved family of a burden, for their loss leaves them too preoccupied to provide food for others.
His practice was to refrain from announcing a death; indeed, he forbade it, saying, “It is a practice of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance” (3). Hudhayfa disliked the idea of his family informing people of his death, saying, “I fear that this might constitute announcing a death” (4).
(1) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (1294) and Muslim (103), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd.
(2) Recorded by al-Shāfiʿī in al-Umm (2/35), Ahmad (1751), Abū Dāwūd (3132), al-Tirmidhī (998), Ibn Mājah (1610), al-Dāraqutnī (1850), and al-Bayhaqī (4/61), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar. Al-Tirmidhī graded it hasan (sound), al-Hākim graded it authentic (1/372), and al-Diyāʾ al-Maqdisī included it in his selection (9/166–167). Ahmad (27086), Ibn Mājah (1611), and al-Tabarānī (24/143) recorded a similar, longer report from Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, but it is weak because Umm ʿĪsā al-Jazzār and Umm Jaʿfar bint Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Tālib are unknown narrators. ʿĀʾishah al-Siddīqah (the truthful; may Allah be pleased with her) would order a pot of talbīna (flour or bran gruel) to be cooked. Then tharīd (bread soaked in broth) would be prepared, and the talbīna poured over it. She would then say: “Eat some of it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Talbīna soothes the patient’s heart and relieves some of the sorrow.’” See Sahīh al-Bukhārī (5417, 5689, 5690) and Sahīh Muslim (2216).
(3) Recorded by al-Tirmidhī (984), who graded it weak because of Abū Hamzah Maymūn al-Aʿwar. It was also recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah (11318), al-Bazzār (5/19), and al-Tabarānī in al-Kabīr (10/70) and al-Awsat (3061); these chains also contain this same Abū Hamzah.
(4) Recorded by Ahmad (23455), al-Tirmidhī (986), Ibn Mājah (1476), and al-Bayhaqī (4/74), from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, who, whenever someone close to him died, would say: “Do not inform anyone of his death, for I fear that this might constitute naʿy (announcing a death). I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid naʿy.” Its chain of transmission is sound. See Fath al-Bārī (3/93).
