the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in favorable terms, and he offered the funeral prayer for him.” The narrations from al-Zuhrī differ over the mention of the funeral prayer. Mahmūd ibn Ghaylān included it in his narration from ‘Abd al-Razzāq, from al-Zuhrī, whereas eight other transmitters from ‘Abd al-Razzāq differed from him and did not mention it (1). They are: Ishāq ibn Rāhawayh, Muhammad ibn Yahyā al-Dhuhlī, Nūh ibn Habīb, al-Hasan ibn ‘Alī, Muhammad ibn al-Mutawakkil, Humayd ibn Zanjawayh, and Ahmad ibn Mansūr al-Ramādī.
Al-Bayhaqī said (2): “Mahmūd ibn Ghaylān’s statement that he offered the funeral prayer for him is erroneous, because the transmitters from ‘Abd al-Razzāq unanimously relate the contrary, followed by the unanimous agreement (3) of the transmitters from al-Zuhrī to the contrary.”
The reports concerning Mā‘iz ibn Mālik also differ. Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī said: “He neither sought forgiveness for him nor reviled him.” Buraydah ibn al-Husayb reported that he said: “Seek forgiveness for Mā‘iz (4) ibn Mālik.” They then said: “May Allah forgive Mā‘iz ibn Mālik.” Muslim related both reports (5).
Jābir said: “Then he offered the funeral prayer for him.” Al-Bukhārī related this (6); it is the report transmitted by ‘Abd al-Razzāq whose defect has been identified.
