the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and was eighteen months old. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not offer the funeral prayer for him.”
Imam Ahmad (1) said: Ya‘qūb ibn Ibrāhīm related to us, saying: My father related to me, from Ibn Ishāq, who said: ‘Abd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn Hazm related to me, from ‘Amra, from ‘Ā’isha. He then related the report. In the narration transmitted by Hanbal (2), Ahmad said: “This is a highly objectionable hadith, and it comes from (3) Ibn Ishāq.”
Al-Khallāl said: The following was read to ‘Abd Allāh (4): My father related to me: Aswad ibn ‘Āmir related to us: Isrā’īl related to us—he said (5): “and Jābir”—from ‘Āmir, from al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, offered the funeral prayer for his son Ibrāhīm (6), who was sixteen months old.”

(2) Ibn al-Jawzī quoted this statement verbatim in al-‘Ilal al-Mutanāhiya (2:423), without mentioning Hanbal. In al-Isāba (1:338), it is transmitted from Hanbal simply as: “A munkar (objectionable) hadith.”
(3) The al-Risāla edition reads: “wa-wahhā” (and he deemed weak). This alteration originated in the al-Maymaniyya edition: the Indian edition had “wa-huwa” (and it is), with “min” (from) omitted after it, so they ‘corrected’ it in this fashion!
(4) That is, in Kitāb al-‘Ilal (3672). Ahmad also recorded it in al-Musnad (18497), and al-Bayhaqī (4:9) transmitted it through al-Aswad with this chain. Jābir al-Ju‘fī is weak.
(5) That is, Aswad ibn ‘Āmir. Al-‘Ilal reads: “… Aswad ibn ‘Āmir said: Isrā’īl and Jābir related to us.” Al-Musnad (18497) reads: “… Isrā’īl related to us from Jābir.” The al-Risāla edition reads: “Jābir al-Ju‘fī.” The addition “al-Ju‘fī” was made by al-Fiqī.
(6) The al-Risāla edition adds after it: “and he died.” They inserted this from al-Musnad without indicating the addition, although the wording quoted here is from al-‘Ilal, not al-Musnad!
