a time limit for doing so.

Ahmad said: “Who doubts the legitimacy of praying at the grave? It is reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, (1) through six chains of transmission, all of them good (2).” Imām Ahmad therefore set a limit of one month for praying at the grave, since this is the longest interval after which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is reported to have prayed (3). Al-Shāfiʿī permitted it so long as the deceased’s body had not decayed (4). Mālik and Abū Hanīfa prohibited it except for the deceased’s walī, if he had been absent (5).

It was also his practice that he (6) would stand at the head of a deceased man and at the midsection of a deceased woman (7).

(1) The printed editions add after this: “When he missed the funeral prayer, he would pray at the grave.” This is an addition by a copyist or reader in the manuscript from which the Indian edition was produced. (2) Al-Mughnī (3:445); see also al-Awsat (5:413) and al-Istidhkār (3:34). (3) See his Masā’il, as transmitted by Sālih (2:134) and al-Kawsaj (2:814). (4) See al-Muhadhdhab by al-Shīrāzī (1:249). (5) Al-Awsat (5:413), al-Mudawwana (1:257), and al-Hidāya by al-Marghīnānī (1:90). (6) All copies except q, m, mb, and n read “an” (that). (7) Recorded by Ahmad (12180, 13114), Abū Dāwūd (3194), al-Tirmidhī (1034), Ibn Mājah (1494), and al-Bayhaqī (4:33), from Anas ibn Mālik. Al-Tirmidhī graded it good; al-Diyā’ al-Maqdisī included it among his selected reports (7:241); al-Albānī authenticated it in Ahkām al-Janā’iz (p. 109); and Ibn Hazm cited it as evidence in al-Muhallā (5:123–124, 156). Al-Bukhārī (332, 1331, 1332) and Muslim (964) recorded a report from Samura ibn Jundab concerning the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, standing at a woman’s midsection during the funeral prayer. Neither recorded anything concerning a man.
