(1) (4:38); see the source documentation below. (2) Al-Tirmidhī records it under no. 1077 and grades it weak. It was also recorded by Abū Ya‘lā (5858), al-Dāraqutnī (1830, 1831), and al-Bayhaqī. Its chain also includes Yahyā ibn Ya‘lā al-Aslamī, who is as weak as al-Ruhāwī. (3) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (1247, 1340) and Muslim (954) from Ibn ‘Abbās. Muslim’s version does not mention that this took place after one night. (4) Al-Bayhaqī (4:47–48) recorded, through Hammād ibn Wāqid, from Thābit al-Bunānī, from Abū Rāfi‘, from Abū Hurayra, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed at a grave after three days. He said: “This Hammād ibn Wāqid is weak, and this specification of the interval is entirely unauthentic. What is authentic is only what some narrators reported from Hammād ibn Zayd: ‘He asked about her after several days’; and in some versions: ‘One day he mentioned him …’” The underlying report appears in al-Bukhārī (460), through Hammād ibn Zayd, from Thābit, with the same chain thereafter: the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed at a grave, without specifying the interval. Al-Bayhaqī (4:49) also recorded from Nāfi‘ that Ibn ‘Umar arrived three days after the death of ‘Āsim ibn ‘Umar, went to his grave, and prayed over him. Its chain of transmission is authentic. (5) Al-Tirmidhī (1038), Ibn al-Mundhir (5:452–453), al-Tabarānī (6:20), and al-Bayhaqī (4:48) recorded from Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyab, as a mursal report, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed over Umm Sa‘d a month after her death. Its chain of transmission is authentic. Al-Bayhaqī also recorded it from Ibn ‘Abbās with a connected chain and said: “In this chain, Suwayd ibn Sa‘īd alone transmits the statement about his prayer over Umm Sa‘d. The well-known version is the mursal report from Qatāda, from Ibn al-Musayyab, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as noted above. Abū Dāwūd relates [in his Masā’il (p. 384)] that Ahmad ibn Hanbal was told: ‘Suwayd narrated it from Yazīd ibn Zuray‘.’ He replied: ‘Reports like this should not be narrated.’”
