for You are indeed the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.” (1).
Another supplication preserved from him is:
“O Allah, You are her Lord; You created her, provided for her, guided her to Islam, and took her soul. You know what she concealed and what she made known. We have come as intercessors, so forgive her.” (2).
He would instruct people to pray sincerely for the deceased (3).
He would say “Allah is the Greatest” four times. It is also authentically reported that he said it five times. After him, the Companions would
(1) Recorded by Ahmad (16018), Abū Dāwūd (3202), Ibn Mājah (1499), Ibn al-Mundhir in al-Awsat (5:486), and al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (1189) and al-Mu‘jam al-kabīr (22:89), from the hadith of Wāthila ibn al-Asqa‘. Ibn Hibbān (758) graded it authentic, and al-Hāfiz graded it good in Natā’ij al-afkār (4:402).
(2) Recorded by Ahmad (8545, 8751), Abū Dāwūd (3200), al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (10848–10850), al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (1186), and al-Bayhaqī (4:42), from the hadith of Abū Hurayra. Three defects have been identified in this hadith: inconsistency in its chain of transmission, the unknown status of some narrators, and its having been transmitted as a statement of Abū Hurayra rather than of the Prophet. For details, see the commentary of the editors of al-Musnad, who discuss it at length.
(3) In manuscripts m, q, and mb, the latter supplication, together with this sentence, appears before the preceding supplication. In m, the word “placed earlier” is written above wa-hufiza (“also preserved”) in the supplication placed earlier, and “placed later” above the same word in the supplication placed later. I do not know whether this was intended to confirm their order or whether the two labels were inadvertently reversed. The Prophet’s instruction (peace and blessings be upon him) to supplicate sincerely for the deceased was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3199), Ibn Mājah (1497), and Ibn Hibbān (3076, 3077). Its chain includes Muhammad ibn Ishāq, who explicitly stated that he heard it directly in the second report recorded by Ibn Hibbān. Al-Dāraqutnī counted it among the reports uniquely transmitted by Muhammad ibn Ishāq; see Atrāf al-gharā’ib wa-l-afrād (2:285).
