When someone in a state of ihrām (ritual consecration for pilgrimage) died, he would order that the deceased be washed with water and lote-tree leaves and shrouded in his two garments of ihrām: his lower wrap and upper wrap. He would forbid perfuming him or covering his head (1).
He would instruct whoever was responsible for the deceased to provide him with a good shroud (2) and to shroud him in white cloth (3); he would forbid extravagance in the shroud (4). If the shroud was too short to cover the entire body, he would cover the deceased’s head and place some grass over his feet (5).

(3) Recorded by Ahmad (2219, 2479, 3426), Abū Dāwūd (3878, 4061), al-Tirmidhī (994), Ibn Mājah (1472, 3566), and al-Bayhaqī (5:33), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Abbās. It was graded authentic by al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Hibbān (5423), and al-Hākim (1:354). It has a corroborating report narrated by Abū Qilāba from Samura ibn Jundab, recorded by Ahmad (20140) and al-Tirmidhī (2810), who graded it authentic. However, whether Abū Qilāba heard directly from Samura is disputed. See al-Marāsīl by Ibn Abī Hātim (p. 109).
(4) Recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3154), al-Bayhaqī (3:403), and Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhīd (22:144). Its chain includes ‘Amr ibn Hāshim Abū Mālik al-Janbī, of whom al-Bukhārī said, “His reliability is in question”; Muslim graded him weak. See Mīzān al-I‘tidāl (3:290).
(5) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (1276) and Muslim (940), from Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt. Their wording reads: “idhkhir (fragrant grass) over his feet.”
