Chapter
The Prophet’s Guidance (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in Visiting the Sick
He would visit any of his Companions who fell ill. He visited a boy from the People of the Book who used to serve him (1), and he visited his uncle while he was still a polytheist (2). He then invited (3) both of them to Islam. The Jewish boy embraced Islam, but his uncle did not.
He would draw close to the sick person, sit beside his head, and ask about his condition, saying: “How are you feeling?” (4).
It is also reported that he would ask the sick person what he desired, saying: “Is there anything you would like?” If the patient desired something and the Prophet knew it would not harm him, he would have it brought to him (5).
(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1356) from Anas ibn Mālik.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1360 and elsewhere) and Muslim (24), through Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab from his father.
(3) All manuscripts except م and ق read: “wa-ʿarada” (“and he invited”).
(4) Reported by al-Tirmidhī (983), al-Nasāʾī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (10834), and Ibn Mājah (4261), through Thābit from Anas ibn Mālik. Al-Tirmidhī graded it weak, identifying the defect that it was transmitted from Thābit in mursal (disconnected) form. He also reported this assessment from al-Bukhārī in al-ʿIlal al-Kabīr (p. 150). Abū Hātim gave the same assessment in his son’s al-ʿIlal (1806), as did al-Dāraqutnī in his al-ʿIlal (2368). Mālik (2603), and al-Bukhārī through him (3926), reported from ʿĀʾisha: “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) arrived in Medina, Abū Bakr and Bilāl developed a fever.” She said: “I went in to see them and asked, ‘Father, how are you feeling? Bilāl, how are you feeling?’ …”
(5) Reported by Ibn Mājah (1439), Tammām in his al-Fawāʾid (641), al-ʿUqaylī in al-Duʿafāʾ under the biographies of Safwān ibn Hubayra (3/127) and Nūh ibn Rabīʿa Abū Makīn (6/200), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Tibb al-Nawī (2/648), and al-Diyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtāra (12/273–274), from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās. Abū Hātim said in al-ʿIlal (2488): “This is a munkar (rejected) hadith.” He stated that both Safwān ibn Hubayra and Abū Makīn Nūh ibn Rabīʿa are known only through this hadith, and neither has corroborating transmission for his report. See Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (4/277) and Natāʾij al-Afkār (4/237). … It was also reported by Ibn Mājah (1440, 3441), Abū Yaʿlā (4016), and Ibn al-Sunnī in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Layla (p. 540), from Anas ibn Mālik. Its chain includes Yazīd ibn Abān al-Raqāshī, who is weak; he is left unnamed in the sources other than Ibn Mājah. The hadith is weak; al-Hāfiz graded it weak in Natāʾij al-Afkār (4/235–236).
