(2/ 24), which is incorrect and contradicts both the manuscripts and the wording of the two Sahīh collections. Remarkably, the two editors themselves traced the report to its sources, yet gained nothing from doing so!
-
(2/ 157): “Then it was not an ‘umrah. Then I saw the Emigrants and the Helpers doing that, and it was not an ‘umrah. Then the last person I saw doing that was Ibn ‘Umar.” The underlined passage is missing from the al-Risāla edition (2/ 122) because the copyist’s eye skipped ahead, although it appears in all the manuscripts and in Sahīh al-Bukhārī.
-
(2/ 162): “He is the very embodiment of truthfulness.” This was corrupted to “he is not truthful” (2/ 124), reversing the meaning!
-
(2/ 183): “That the late-arriving pilgrim who is unable to perform the initial circumambulation.” This was corrupted to “that the woman who is unable to perform …,” with feminine pronouns used throughout the remainder of the paragraph (2/ 139 - 140). This was a deliberate alteration by some who did not understand the meaning of “murāhiq” (late-arriving pilgrim) in the Hajj chapters.
-
(2/ 398): “It is reported from Anas that he is named that same night.” The al-Risāla edition (2/ 304) reads: “is named after three days.” This is an egregious corruption that changes the meaning.
-
(2/ 452): “When he entered, he would begin by using the tooth-stick and ask after them.” This was misread as “he would begin by asking, or ask after them” (2/ 347).
-
(2/ 458): “This admits six possible interpretations: that the prohibition was abrogated by this act, or vice versa; that it was particular to him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; that it was restricted to buildings; or that it was due to an excuse dictated by the location or something else.” The underlined passage is missing from the al-Risāla edition (2/ 351 - 352), disrupting both the flow and the meaning.
