Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

saw the mount jolting him until his voice broke off, and then said, “He would modulate his voice while reciting,” thus attributing the modulation to the Prophet’s own action. Had it resulted from the mount’s jolting, there would have been no action on his part that could be called (1) vocal modulation.

One night, the Prophet listened to Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī reciting. When he told him about this, Abū Mūsā said, “Had I known that you were listening (2), I would have made my recitation all the more beautiful for you” (3)—meaning, I would have enhanced and adorned it with my voice.

Abū Dāwūd related in his Sunan (4), from ‘Abd al-Jabbār ibn al-Ward, who said: I heard Ibn

(1) Manuscript jīm reads “summiya (was called),” perhaps a scribal oversight. (2) Manuscripts m, q, and mb read “tasma‘ (you hear).” (3) Recorded by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4178), al-Nasā’ī in al-Kubrā (8004), al-Rūyānī in his Musnad (16), and al-Bayhaqī in Shu‘ab al-Īmān (1962), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Burayda, reporting from his father, Burayda ibn al-Husayb: One night, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by Abū Mūsā while he was reciting and said, “He has indeed been granted one of the flutes of the house of David.” The next morning, they told Abū Mūsā about this, and he said, “Had you let me know, I would have made my recitation all the more beautiful.” Al-Albānī graded it authentic in al-Sahīha (3532). The basic report is also recorded by al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (805, 1087) and Muslim (793/235), from Burayda ibn al-Husayb, without the addition, “Had you let me know, I would have made my recitation all the more beautiful.” It is likewise recorded from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī by al-Bukhārī (5048) and Muslim (793/235), without that addition. Ibn Sa‘d in al-Tabaqāt (2:298; 4:101), Ibn Abī Shayba (30567), Ahmad ibn Manī‘ (al-Matālib al-‘Āliya, 3486), and Abū Nu‘aym in al-Hilya (8:302) recorded it from Anas. This version states that the Prophet’s wives were listening and adds, “And I would have stirred your longing all the more.” Abū Nu‘aym said, “Only Thābit narrated it from Anas with this wording.” (4) No. 1471. It was also recorded by Ibn Abī ‘Āsim in al-Āhād wa-l-Mathānī (1903) and al-Bayhaqī (2:54; 10:230), from Abū Lubāba. This attribution is erroneous; the correct chain is Ibn Abī Mulayka, from Ibn Abī Nahīk, from Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās. This is how Ahmad (1476) and Abū Dāwūd (1469, 1470) recorded it, and it is the version judged correct by al-Bukhārī in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (5:401) and al-Dāraqutnī in al-‘Ilal (649). Its chain of transmission is good. Al-Bukhārī (7527) also records it from Abū Hurayra. See al-Tirmidhī, al-‘Ilal al-Kabīr (p. 376); Ibn Abī Hātim, al-‘Ilal (538); and al-Dāraqutnī, al-Tatabbu‘ (pp. 126–128).
