He loved to hear the Quran recited by others. He instructed ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd to recite, and he recited to him while he listened. Hearing the Quran from him moved the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to such reverent humility that his eyes shed tears (1).
He would recite the Quran standing, sitting, and lying down, whether he had performed ablution or was in a state of minor ritual impurity. Only janābah (major ritual impurity) prevented him from reciting it (2).
(1) Recorded by al-Bukhārī (5050).
(2) Recorded by Ahmad (627), Abū Dāwūd (229), al-Tirmidhī (146), al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (265, 266) and al-Kubrā (257, 258), Ibn Mājah (594), Ibn Khuzayma (208), Ibn Hibbān (799, 800), al-Dāraqutnī (425, 429), al-Hākim (4:107), and al-Bayhaqī (1:88), through Shu‘ba, from ‘Amr ibn Murra, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Salima, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib, as a marfū‘ report (attributed to the Prophet). Its transmission hinges on ‘Abd Allāh ibn Salima. Al-Bukhārī stated in al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr (5:99): “Abū Dāwūd (al-Tayālisī) reported from Shu‘ba, from ‘Amr ibn Murra: ‘Abd Allāh used to narrate to us; we recognized some of his reports and found others objectionable. He had grown old.’” Al-Bukhārī then said: “He is not corroborated in this report.” For this reason, al-Shāfi‘ī and al-Bayhaqī regarded it as weak, as noted in Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (1:323–324). Al-Albānī also graded the hadith weak and discussed it in detail in Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (1:79–85) and Irwā’ al-Ghalīl (485). The correct version is mawqūf (attributed to ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib himself), recorded from him through several chains by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (1306, 1321) and Ibn Abī Shayba (1092, 1097, 1119).
Muslim (373) recorded a report from ‘Ā’isha that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to remember Allah at all times. Al-Bukhārī also cited it without its chain of transmission in his Sahīh, before hadiths 305 and 634, using an affirmative form of attribution.
