the sun passed its zenith while he was at his stopping place, he would combine the noon and afternoon prayers as the sun passed its zenith. If he set out before the sun passed its zenith, he would delay the noon prayer until he could combine it with the afternoon prayer at the time of the afternoon prayer. He said: And I think he said that the same applied to the sunset and night prayers.” Al-Shāfi‘ī (1) narrated this through Ibn Abī Yahyā, from Husayn, and through Ibn ‘Ajlān, as a report that had reached him from Husayn.

Al-Bayhaqī (2) said: This was narrated from Husayn ibn ‘Abd Allāh by eminent scholars, including Hishām ibn ‘Urwa and others. ‘Abd al-Razzāq (3) narrated it from Ibn Jurayj, from Husayn, from ‘Ikrima and Kurayb, both from Ibn ‘Abbās. Ayyūb (4) also narrated it from Abū Qilāba, from Ibn ‘Abbās, saying: As far as I know, it is a report traced back to the Prophet.

Ismā‘īl ibn Ishāq (5) said: Ismā‘īl ibn Abī Uways (6) narrated to us, saying: My brother narrated to me, from Sulaymān ibn Bilāl (7), from Hishām ibn ‘Urwa, from Kurayb, from

(1) Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it from him in Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (4:292–293). (2) In Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (4:293). (3) No. 4405. (4) Ibn al-Mundhir also transmitted it through him (3:125), with the wording: “If you are travelling and need to halt, continue until you find a stopping place, then combine the two prayers. If you have already halted and some matter requires you to leave promptly, combine them and then depart.” It does not include Ayyūb’s statement: “I know it only as a report attributed to the Prophet.” (5) Al-Hāfiz mentioned it in al-Talkhīs al-Habīr (3:973–974), after the forthcoming hadith of Yahyā ibn ‘Abd al-Hamīd, but did not quote its wording. I did not find it in the printed edition of al-Ahkām by Ismā‘īl ibn Ishāq. (6) مب reads “Abī Idrīs,” as do the Maymaniyya edition and subsequent editions. (7) مب reads “Mālik,” as do the Maymaniyya edition and subsequent editions. The Indian edition has the reading adopted here from the manuscripts.
