Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

He would also say: “O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness, piety, and deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family we leave behind. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, sorrow upon returning, and distressing sights concerning my family and wealth.” On returning, he would repeat these words and add: “We return, repenting, worshipping our Lord and praising Him” (1).

When he and his Companions ascended mountain passes, they would say, “Allah is the Greatest” (2), and when they descended into valleys, they would say, “Glory be to Allah” (3).

(1) Reported by Muslim (1342), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. (2) Reported by al-Bukhārī (2992, 4205, 6384, 6409, 6610, 7386) and Muslim (2704), from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī: “We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Whenever we looked down upon a valley, we proclaimed Allah’s oneness and greatness, raising our voices. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O people, take it easy on yourselves. You are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent. He is with you; He is All-Hearing and Near. Blessed is His name, and exalted is His majesty.’” (3) Reported by Abū Dāwūd (2599), following the hadith of ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar. Its chain includes Ibn Jurayj and Abū al-Zubayr, both of whom explicitly stated that they heard the report. Ibn ‘Umar’s hadith in Muslim (1342) does not include this sentence, nor do the versions in ‘Abd al-Razzāq (9232), Ahmad (6311), or Ibn Hibbān (2969). It appears to be a statement by Ibn Jurayj, as indicated by the mursal (disconnected) report transmitted from him by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (9245).
