Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Whenever he (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw rain, he would say, “O Allah, make it a beneficial downpour” (1).

He would uncover part of his body so that the rain could fall upon him. When asked about this, he replied, “Because it has only just come from its Lord” (2).

Al-Shāfi‘ī (3) said: Someone whom I do not suspect of dishonesty informed us, on the authority of Yazīd ibn al-Hād, that whenever rainwater flowed, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would say, “Let us go out to this water, which Allah has made a means of purification, so that we may purify ourselves with it and praise (4) Allah for it.”

We were also informed (5) by someone whom I do not suspect of dishonesty, on the authority of Ishāq ibn ‘Abd Allāh, that whenever rainwater flowed, ‘Umar would take his companions out to it and say, “Were anyone to come from where this water comes, we would rub ourselves against him.”

Whenever he (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw clouds and wind, concern would show on his face, and he would pace back and forth. Once it rained, he would feel relieved and his concern would disappear, for he feared that it might bring punishment (6).

(1) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1032), from ‘Ā’ishah. (2) Reported by Muslim (898), from ‘Ā’ishah. Also reported by al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad (571). (3) In al-Umm (2/553), and transmitted from al-Shāfi‘ī by al-Bayhaqī in Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (5/185) and al-Kubrā (3/359). Yazīd ibn al-Hād is Yazīd ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Usāmah ibn al-Hād al-Laythī, a trustworthy Successor; the report is therefore mursal (a Successor’s report directly from the Prophet). Al-Bayhaqī said in al-Kubrā: “This is discontinuous; a report concerning this has also been transmitted from ‘Umar.” (4) Jīm: “fa-yatatahharu minhu wa-yahmadu (so he purifies himself with it and praises [Allah]).” The same reading appears in Sād, with the initial letter of the second verb left undotted. (5) Al-Umm (2/553–554), and transmitted from al-Shāfi‘ī by al-Bayhaqī in Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (5/185) and al-Kubrā (3/359). Its chain contains unknown narrators and a break in transmission. (6) Reported by al-Bukhārī (3206) and Muslim (899), from ‘Ā’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.
