Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

He once supplicated for rain, and Abū Lubāba rose to address him, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, the dates are in the drying enclosures.” The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “O Allah, send us rain until Abū Lubāba stands naked and blocks the drainage outlet (1) of his date-drying enclosure with his waistcloth.” It rained, and the people gathered around Abū Lubāba, saying, “It will not stop until you stand naked and block the drainage outlet of your date-drying enclosure with your waistcloth, as the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said.” He did so. Then the rain poured down (2).

When the rain became excessive, they asked him to pray for clear skies. He prayed for them, saying, “O Allah, let it rain around us, not upon us. O Allah, let it fall upon the hills, the mountains, the low hills (3), the valley bottoms, and the places where trees grow” (4).

(1) Tha‘lab al-mirbad: the opening in a date-drying enclosure through which rainwater drains. (2) Al-Sunan wa-l-Ahkām (2426). Reported by Abū ‘Awānah (2515), al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (2186) and al-Mu‘jam al-Saghīr (385), and al-Bayhaqī (3/354), from Abū Lubābah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir. Its chain includes al-Sindī ibn ‘Abdawayh, who is Sahl ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, an unknown narrator. Ibn Hibbān said in al-Thiqāt (8/304): “He transmits unusual reports.” See Lisān al-Mīzān (4/195). The chain also includes ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Madanī, whom I have not been able to identify. (3) Zirāb is the plural of zarib, meaning a broad, flat mountain or, according to another definition, a small mountain. (4) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1013) and Muslim (897), from Anas ibn Mālik.
