Among his recorded supplications for rain were: “O Allah, send rain to Your servants and Your animals, spread Your mercy, and revive Your lifeless land” (1); and “O Allah, grant us rain that brings relief, wholesome (2) and promoting abundant growth, beneficial and not harmful, immediate and not delayed” (3).
He (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was granted rain every time he supplicated for it.
(1) Reported by Mālik (513) from Yahyā ibn Sa‘īd al-Ansārī, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, in mursal (disconnected) form; likewise by ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4912), from Ibn al-Taymī, through Yahyā, with the same chain. Abū Dāwūd also transmitted it through Mālik in al-Marāsīl (69). In al-Sunan (1176), he paired it with a report transmitted to him by Sahl ibn Sālih, from ‘Alī ibn Qādim, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Yahyā ibn Sa‘īd, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, with a connected chain. In his entry on ‘Alī ibn Qādim in al-Kāmil (8/126), Ibn ‘Adī mentioned that he was criticized for transmitting reports from al-Thawrī that were not reliably preserved. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr stated in al-Tamhīd (23/432) that Hafs ibn Ghiyāth, ‘Abd al-Rahīm ibn Sulaymān, and Sallām Abū al-Mundhir also transmitted it with a connected chain. These supporting transmissions, however, are not free of weakness and unidentified narrators. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also reported it in al-Matar wa-l-Ra‘d wa-l-Barq (27), through Abū Burdah, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, as a report attributed to the Prophet. This Abū Burdah is ‘Amr ibn Yazīd al-Kūfī, who is weak. Thus, the correct version is Mālik’s mursal report. Allah knows best.
(2) In the manuscripts, it is written “mariyyan” (wholesome), with the hamzah softened.
(3) Reported by Abū Dāwūd (1169), Abū ‘Awānah (2527), Ibn Khuzaymah (1416), al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (2197), al-Hākim (1/327), and al-Bayhaqī (3/355), through several chains from Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd al-Tanāfisī, from Mis‘ar, from Yazīd al-Faqīr, from Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh, as a report attributed to the Prophet. However, a defect was identified in it: Muhammad’s brother, Ya‘lā ibn ‘Ubayd, transmitted it from Mis‘ar, from Yazīd al-Faqīr, in mursal form. See al-‘Ilal wa-l-Ma‘rifah, as transmitted by ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad (5530, 5531). Ya‘lā had a better memory and was more reliable than his brother, as stated by Ahmad, Ibn Ma‘īn, and Ibn ‘Ammār. Ahmad said of Muhammad: “… He would make mistakes and would not retract them.” See Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (26/56–58) and Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb (9/328). Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr stated in al-Tamhīd (23/433): “It is the best report transmitted from the Prophet concerning supplication for rain.”
