The third form: He supplicated for rain from the pulpit in Medina, offering the supplication alone on a day other than Friday (1). No prayer is recorded from him on this occasion (2).
The fourth form: He supplicated for rain while seated in the mosque, raising his hands and calling upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Among the supplications preserved from that occasion was:
“O Allah, send us rain (3) that brings fertility and covers the land, promptly and without delay, beneficial and not harmful” (4).
(1) All witnesses except ق, م, مب, and ن read “al-jumu‘ah” (Friday).
(2) Reported by Ibn Mājah (1270), Abū ‘Awānah (2516), al-Tabarānī in al-Du‘ā’ (2195) and al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr (12/130), and al-Diyā’ al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtārah (9/527, 528), through two routes from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Idrīs, from Husayn, from Habīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Ibn ‘Abbās, as a report attributed to the Prophet with a connected chain. Its narrators are trustworthy; however, Habīb ibn Abī Thābit is a mudallis (a narrator who conceals intermediaries), and here he narrated using ‘an (“from”), without explicitly stating direct hearing. On this basis, al-Hāfiz identified a defect in it in Natā’ij al-Afkār (5/99), as did al-Albānī in al-Irwā’ (2/145, 146). ‘Abd al-Razzāq (4907) and Ibn Abī Shaybah (32431) also reported it through two routes from Habīb ibn Abī Thābit as mursal (disconnected). The hadith is therefore more likely to be mursal, which is the conclusion preferred by Ibn Rajab in his Fath al-Bārī (6/218). Supporting the mursal report is what Ibn Abī Shaybah (8428) transmitted with an authentic chain from ‘Atā’ ibn Abī Marwān al-Aslamī, from his father, who said: “We went out with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb to supplicate for rain, and he did no more than seek forgiveness.” See also Musannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah (8429).
(3) After this, مب and ن add “mughīthan” (widespread). This addition does not occur in Sunan Ibn Mājah, whose wording is reproduced here.
(4) Reported by Ibn Abī Shaybah (29835), Ahmad (18062, 18066), ‘Abd ibn Humayd (372), Ibn Mājah (1269), al-Tabarānī (20/318, 319), al-Hākim (1/328, 329), and al-Bayhaqī (3/355, 356), from Ka‘b ibn Murrah—or Murrah ibn Ka‘b—al-Aslamī. Its chain includes Sālim ibn Abī al-Ja‘d, who did not hear directly from Shurahbīl ibn al-Simt. The preceding hadith corroborates it.
There is another corroborating report from Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh, transmitted by Abū Dāwūd (1169) and others. Its chain is authentic, although it has been criticized as mursal. According to Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, it is the best report attributed to the Prophet concerning supplication for rain. Its sources and chains will be discussed in detail shortly.
