Chapter
His Guidance (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in Seeking Rain
It is established that he sought rain in several ways:
The first: On Friday, while delivering his sermon from the pulpit, he said: “O Allah, grant us relief! O Allah, grant us relief (1)!” (2), “O Allah, send us rain! O Allah, send us rain!” (3).
The second: He appointed a day for the people to go out to the prayer ground. He went out after sunrise, humble, in plain attire (4), reverent, walking unhurriedly (5), and earnestly imploring Allah (6). Then, when
(1) The al-Risālah edition adds a third “Allāhumma aghithnā” (O Allah, grant us relief) after this, taken from al-Sahīh without indicating the addition. The same applies to “Allāhumma isqinā” (O Allah, send us rain) below.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1014) and Muslim (897), from Anas ibn Mālik.
(3) Reported by al-Bukhārī (1013, 1021), from Anas.
(4) Sād and Jīm read “mutadhallilan” (humbly).
(5) All manuscripts and early editions read “mutawassilan” (seeking a means of approach). The reading has been corrected on the basis of the sources recording the hadith; it was also corrected in the al-Risālah edition. Tarassala fī al-mashy means to walk without hurrying.
(6) The description of his manner when setting out, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is reported by Abū Dāwūd (1165), al-Tirmidhī (558, 559), al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (1506, 1508, 1521) and al-Kubrā (1820, 1821, 1824, 1839), Ibn Mājah (1266), and others, through Hishām ibn Ishāq, from his father, from Ibn ‘Abbās. Abū Hātim described Hishām ibn Ishāq as “a shaykh.” Ibn Hibbān included him in al-Thiqāt, and several trustworthy narrators transmitted from him. The hadith was graded authentic by al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Khuzaymah (1405, 1408, 1419), Ibn Hibbān (2862), and al-Hākim (1/326), and graded hasan (sound) by al-Albānī in al-Irwā’ (665).
