(4/ 398): “Is this not contrary to what is known of his religion (peace and blessings be upon him)?” Al-Fiqī (3/ 325) added after it: “by necessity.” The al-Risāla edition (4/ 254) followed him, of course!
-
(4/ 416): The author quoted the report narrated by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat melon with fresh dates and would say: “We counteract the heat of this with the coolness of that.” Al-Fiqī (3/ 331) changed it to: “We temper the heat of this with the coolness of that, and the coolness of that with the heat of this,” as in Sunan Abī Dāwūd. The al-Risāla edition (4/ 263) followed him.
-
(4/ 446): In the hadith of Umm Sa‘d in Sunan Ibn Mājah: “... bless vinegar.” Al-Fiqī added after it, from the Sunan, without indicating the addition—as was his habit: “for it was the condiment of the prophets before me.” The al-Risāla edition followed him. The author’s source was the book of Ibn Tarkhān al-Hamawī.
-
(4/ 486): In the hadith of Umm Salama in Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī: “... then he rose for prayer, without having performed ablution.” Al-Fiqī, 3/ 361, changed it to “and he did not perform ablution.” The al-Risāla edition (4/ 302) followed him, although the wording in the Jāmi‘ is as we have retained it.
-
(4/ 518): “It is authentically reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Sahīh that he said.” After “the Sahīh,” al-Fiqī added, without justification or indication: “in the hadith of Umm Salama.” The al-Risāla edition (4/ 321) followed him, contrary to its manuscript source.
Among the words and constructions that al-Fiqī altered, with the al-Risāla edition following him rather than its manuscript source, were “al-bahārīn, al-mutarākib (overlapping), ‘ubūdiyyat ghayr Allāh (servitude to other than Allah), and lā yumkin al-‘āqila (a rational person cannot),” which he changed to “al-bahrān, al-mutarākim (accumulated), al-‘ubūdiyya li-ghayr Allāh (servitude to other than Allah), and lā yumkin li-‘āqil (it is not possible for a rational person).”
After all this, I do not know how the two editors can rightly claim: “In publishing this book, we relied on the two manuscripts described above, taking them as our base text”!
