Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

between him and ‘Ā’ishah’s chamber—and whenever he emerges, he will claim that he is Allah. Whoever believes in him, accepts his claims, and follows him will gain no benefit from any righteous deeds he previously performed. Whoever rejects him and declares him a liar will not be punished for any deeds he previously performed.

He will prevail over the entire earth except the Sacred Sanctuary and Jerusalem. He will besiege the believers in Jerusalem, and they will be severely shaken. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will destroy him and his troops, until even the remnant of a wall—or he said, ‘the base of a wall’—and the root of a tree will call out: ‘O believer, O Muslim, here is a Jew—or he said, “here is an unbeliever”—so come and kill him!’”

He said: “That will not happen until you witness events whose gravity grows in your minds, and you ask one another (1): ‘Did your Prophet ever mention any of these things to you?’ Nor will it happen until mountains move from their places. Then, immediately afterward, comes the taking.”

This, then, is what has been authentically reported from him concerning the manner of the eclipse prayer and its sermon. Other reports describe him performing it in different ways.

One describes three bowings in each unit of prayer (2).

Another describes four bowings in each unit of prayer (3).

Another describes it as resembling the most recent (4) prayer performed, with one bowing in each unit (5). However,

(1) Thus vocalized in Mīm, with a doubled sīn (s). (2) Transmitted by Muslim (904/10) and others, from Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh. (3) Transmitted by Muslim (908, 909), from Ibn ‘Abbās; he added: “A similar report from ‘Alī.” The hadith of ‘Alī was transmitted by Ahmad (1216), Ibn Khuzaymah (1388, 1394), and al-Bayhaqī (3/330–331). Its chain includes Hanash ibn al-Mu‘tamir al-Kūfī, who has some weakness as a narrator and alone transmitted this hadith from ‘Alī. The author will later quote al-Bayhaqī’s discussion of Ibn ‘Abbās’s hadith. (4) The printed editions read “ka-ihdā” (“like one”)—a textual corruption. (5) Transmitted by Ahmad (6483, 6763, 6868), Abū Dāwūd (1194), al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamā’il (325), and Ibn Khuzaymah (901, 1389), from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Amr. Its chain includes ‘Atā’ ibn al-Sā’ib, whose memory later deteriorated. In some of the cited chains, al-Thawrī, Shu‘bah, and Hammād ibn Salamah transmitted from him; they were among those who heard him before that deterioration. See Sahīh Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (4/354).
