the hadith of Ibn ‘Abbās transmitted by Jubārah ibn Mughallis (1), and the hadith of al-Fākih ibn Sa‘d transmitted by Yūsuf ibn Khālid al-Samtī (2). However, it is established that Ibn ‘Umar, who adhered strictly to the sunnah, would bathe on Eid before going out (3).
He (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out on foot, with a short spear carried ahead of him. Upon his arrival at the prayer ground, it would be planted before him so that he could pray facing it (4). At that time, the prayer ground was an open space with no building or wall, and the spear served as his prayer barrier.
He would delay the Eid al-Fitr prayer and hold the Eid al-Adhā prayer earlier (5). And Ibn ‘Umar, with
(1) Reported by Ibn Mājah (1315), Ibn ‘Adī in al-Kāmil, in the entry on Hajjāj ibn Tamīm (3/289), and, through him, al-Bayhaqī (3/278). Its chain includes Jubārah ibn Mughallis and Hajjāj ibn Tamīm, both weak transmitters.
(2) Reported by Ibn Mājah (1316), ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad in his additions to al-Musnad (16720), and al-Tabarānī in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr (18/320) and al-Awsat (7230). Yūsuf ibn Khālid al-Samtī is a liar and a fabricator of hadith. The chain also includes ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Uqbah ibn al-Fākih, an unknown transmitter.
(3) Reported by Mālik (488) and, through him, ‘Abd al-Razzāq (5753), Ibn al-Mundhir in al-Awsat (4/293, 294), and al-Bayhaqī (3/278). See also Musannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah (5823, 5825).
(4) Reported by al-Bukhārī (973, 494, 972) and Muslim (501), from Ibn ‘Umar. Ibn al-Mundhir adds in al-Awsat (4/300): “He would go out on foot.” Its chain contains a break or an omission. As for walking to the Eid prayer, al-Tirmidhī (530) and Ibn Mājah (1295–1297) report from ‘Alī that this is part of the sunnah, but all its chains are open to criticism.
(5) The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wrote to ‘Amr ibn Hazm while he was in Najrān: “Go out early for Eid al-Adhā, delay going out for Eid al-Fitr, and remind the people.” Reported by al-Shāfi‘ī in al-Umm (2/489), ‘Abd al-Razzāq (5651), and al-Bayhaqī (3/282). Its chain includes Ibrāhīm, the teacher of al-Shāfi‘ī and ‘Abd al-Razzāq, whose reports are abandoned. Abū al-Huwayrith also has some weakness, and he transmitted it as a mursal report. Al-Bayhaqī said: “This is mursal. I have searched for it in the other transmitted versions of his letter to ‘Amr ibn Hazm, but have not found it. Allah knows best.” See also al-Sunan wa-l-Ahkām (2320).
