Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

the Sunan collections of Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah (1). His regular practice was to offer the Eid prayers at the prayer ground.

He would wear his finest clothes when going out for the two Eids. He had a set of garments that he wore for the two Eids and the Friday prayer (2). Sometimes he wore two green striped garments (3), and sometimes a red striped garment (4).

This was not solid red, as some people suppose, for if it had been, it would not

(1) Abū Dāwūd (1160) and Ibn Mājah (1313); also reported by al-Hākim (1/295) and al-Bayhaqī (3/310), from Abū Hurayrah. Its transmission hinges on ‘Īsā ibn ‘Abd al-A‘lā ibn Abī Farwah. Al-Dhahabī states in Mīzān al-I‘tidāl (3/315): “He is scarcely known.” He then cites this hadith and says: “This is a fard munkar hadith (an isolated, objectionable report). Ibn al-Qattān said: ‘I do not know of this ‘Īsā being mentioned in any biographical work on narrators or in any other chain of transmission.’” See also Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (10/17). (2) Al-Sunan wa-l-Ahkām by al-Diyā’ al-Maqdisī (2309, 2308). Ibn Khuzaymah reports it in his Sahīh (1766), from Jābir. In his edition, al-A‘zamī printed “jubba (robe)” in the text and stated that his manuscript read “al-j-l-h” (unvocalized). Yet the manuscript actually reads “hulla (outfit)” (fol. 195/a), as in Māhir al-Fahl’s edition. This is the correct reading, since Ibn Khuzaymah placed it under the heading “Chapter on the recommendation to wear outfits on Friday …”; he did not say “wearing robes”! Ibn Sa‘d also reports it in al-Tabaqāt (1/387), Abū al-Shaykh in Akhlāq al-Nabī (293), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Sunan al-Kubrā (3/247, 280) and Ma‘rifat al-Sunan (4/416). All give the wording “He used to wear his red mantle on the two Eids and on Friday,” or similar wording. Its chain contains ‘an‘ana by al-Hajjāj ibn Artāh—transmission using “from” without explicitly stating direct hearing. Al-Hāfiz judged its chain weak in al-Matālib al-‘Āliyah (4/709), and al-Albānī judged the hadith weak in al-Silsilah al-Da‘īfah (2455). (3) Reported by Ahmad (7109), Abū Dāwūd (4065, 4206), al-Tirmidhī (2812), and al-Nasā’ī in al-Mujtabā (1572, 5319) and al-Kubrā (1794, 9578), from Abū Rimthah al-Taymī. Its chain is authentic, and Ibn Hibbān classified the hadith as authentic (5995). (4) Reported from al-Barā’ by al-Bukhārī (3551, 5848, 5901) and Muslim (2337), and from Abū Juhayfah by al-Bukhārī (376) and Muslim (503), with the wording “a red outfit.”
