Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim
  • (4/ 53): “Rabilan (plump), with little heat” was corrupted in al-Fiqī’s edition (1/ 61) and others to “with little movement.” The al-Risāla edition (4/ 38) likewise reads: “Rahilan (flabby), with little movement.” As for the word rahilan, this is indeed the reading in the manuscript source of the al-Risāla edition and in the printed editions. But where it reads “movement,” its manuscript source has “heat,” as do all the other manuscripts. Did the two editors follow their manuscript source in the first word but depart from it in the second? Where, then, is their explanation and justification for preferring one reading over another?

  • (4/ 64): “For these people apostatized and disbelieved after embracing Islam.” The words “and disbelieved” are omitted from the al-Risāla edition (4/ 45), although they occur in its manuscript source, the other manuscripts, and the Indian edition. They were, however, omitted from some of the editions on which al-Fiqī relied, and the al-Risāla edition followed him.

  • (4/ 81): “From Abū Salama and Sa‘īd al-Maqburī.” The al-Risāla edition (4/ 55) reads: “… and Abū Sa‘īd al-Maqburī,” following al-Fiqī and others, contrary to its manuscript source.

  • (4/ 96–97): “And that the treatment of spirits, supplications, and turning to Allah produces …” The al-Risāla edition reads “through supplications,” following al-Fiqī’s edition and those preceding it. This is an alteration made by someone who did not understand the context.

  • (4/ 100): “The physician’s good fortune.” Al-Fiqī (3/ 183) changed this to “the physician’s skill,” and the al-Risāla edition (4/ 67) did likewise.

  • (4/ 100): ‘Abd al-Latīf’s edition (3/ 86) reads: “As for compound diseases, they often arise from combining foods.” This is also the reading in some manuscripts. Shaykh al-Fiqī did not like faghāliban (“they often”), so he printed (3/ 183): faghāliban mā (“they often,” with an added mā). The al-Risāla edition (4/ 67) followed him, departing from its manuscript source, which reads faghālibuhā (“most of them”), as do the other manuscript witnesses.
