Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

Among his sermons, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the following has been preserved through the narration of ‘Alī ibn Zayd ibn Jud‘ān, who is weak as a narrator:

“O people (1), repent to Allah, mighty and majestic, before you die. Hasten to perform righteous deeds, and maintain the bond between yourselves and your Lord by remembering Him often and giving charity generously, secretly and openly = you will be rewarded, praised, and granted provision. Know that Allah, mighty and majestic, has made the Friday prayer a prescribed obligation upon you, here where I stand, in this month and this year, until the Day of Resurrection, for everyone who can find a way to attend it. Whoever abandons it during my lifetime or after me, denying it and treating it with contempt, while he has a ruler, whether unjust or just—may Allah neither set his affairs in order nor bless his undertakings. Indeed, he has no prayer, no ablution, no fasting (2), no zakat, no Hajj, and no act of righteousness (3) until he repents. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. No woman shall lead a man in prayer; no Bedouin shall lead an emigrant in prayer; and no wicked man shall lead a believer in prayer, unless a ruler whose sword and whip he fears compels him.” (4)

Also preserved among his sermons is the following:

“Praise be to Allah. We seek His help and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves. Whoever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whoever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, whom He sent

(1) Sād and Jīm read “ayyuhā al-nās” (O people), without “yā” (O). (2) “Alā wa-lā sawma lahu” (Indeed, he has no fasting) is absent from Sād, Jīm, and Mīm-Bā. Kāf and ‘Ayn read “siyām” (fasting). (3) The printed editions read “baraka” (blessing), a textual corruption. (4) Reported by Ibn Mājah (1081), Ibn ‘Adī in al-Kāmil, in the entry on ‘Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad al-‘Adawī (6:559–561), and al-Bayhaqī in al-Kubrā (3:171) and Shu‘ab al-Īmān (2754). Its chain of transmission includes al-Walīd ibn Bukayr, who is layyin al-hadīth (weak in hadith transmission); ‘Abd Allāh al-‘Adawī, who is matrūk (abandoned as a narrator); and ‘Alī ibn Zayd ibn Jud‘ān, who is weak. ‘Abd ibn Humayd (1134) also reported a similar version through another chain from ‘Alī ibn Zayd.
