Also in his Musnad (1), Junādah al-Azdī said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a Friday with seven men from al-Azd, making eight of us. He was eating and said, “Come and eat.” We replied, “O Messenger of Allah, we are fasting.” He asked, “Did you fast yesterday?” We replied, “No.” He asked, “Will you fast tomorrow?” We replied, “No.” He said, “Then break your fast.” So we ate with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. When he went out and sat on the pulpit, he called for a vessel of water and drank while on the pulpit, with the people watching, showing them that he was not fasting on Friday.
Also in his Musnad (2), Abū Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Friday is a day of celebration, so do not make your day of celebration a day of fasting unless you also fast the day before or the day after.”
Ibn Abī Shaybah (3) reported from Sufyān ibn Uyaynah, from Imrān ibn Zabyān, from Hakīm ibn Sad, from Ali ibn Abī Tālib, who said: Whoever among you voluntarily fasts a few days each month should include Thursday among his fasting days. He should not fast on Friday, for it is a day of eating, drinking and remembrance of Allah. Thus he brings together two (4) virtuous days for Allah: the day of his fasting and the day of his worship
