Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

It has also been reported that Ibn Umar said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, refrain from fasting on a Friday.” Ibn Abī Shaybah cited this (1), narrating from Hafs ibn Ghiyāth, from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Umayr ibn Abī Umayr, from Ibn Umar.

He also narrated (2) from (3) Ibn Abbās that he used to fast on Fridays and did so regularly (4).

As for the person Mālik mentioned, they say it was Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir (5); it has also been said:

(1) No. 9352; the quotation is taken from al-Istidhkār. Also transmitted by Musaddad (al-Matālib al-‘Āliya, no. 1101), al-Tarsūsī in Musnad ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar (31), and Abū Ya‘lā (5709), all through Hafs with the same chain. Ibn al-Jawzī cited it through two chains in al-‘Ilal al-Mutanāhiya (2/59–60), saying: “This hadith is not established. Its first chain includes Layth, whose reliability we have just impugned. The second chain includes Ja‘far ibn Nasr; Ibn ‘Adī said: ‘He transmitted false reports from trustworthy narrators,’ and Ibn Hibbān said: ‘He narrates from trustworthy narrators things they never related.’” He also said: “This hadith text is fabricated.” See Tanqīh al-Tahqīq (3/346–347). (2) That is, Ibn Abī Shayba. The author draws on al-Istidhkār, and the context gives the impression that the verb is ruwiya (it was reported), in the passive voice, as vocalized in the printed edition of al-Istidhkār, and that what is reported is Ibn ‘Abbās’s practice. (3) “‘An” (from) was omitted in the Maymaniyya edition and subsequent editions. (4) Transmitted by Ibn Abī Shayba (9351), from Hafs, from Layth, from Tāwūs, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: “I never saw him refrain from fasting on a Friday.” Ibn al-Jawzī said in al-‘Ilal (2/59): “This hadith is not authentic; its chain includes Layth.” (5) Qāf and Mīm read “al-madhkūr” (the aforementioned), a corruption.
