Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

I asked, ‘What do the birds say on that day?’ They replied, ‘They say, “My Lord, keep us safe, keep us safe (1); a good day (2).”’”

In The Book of Dreams (3) and elsewhere, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā relates that a member of Āsim al-Jahdarī’s family said: “I saw Āsim (4) al-Jahdarī in a dream two years after his death. I asked, ‘Have you not died?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘Where are you, then?’ He replied, ‘By Allah, I am in one of the gardens of Paradise. A group of my companions and I meet on the eve of every Friday

(1) This is vocalized with a doubled lām in Qāf and ‘Ayn. The reading attested in the sources documenting the report and elsewhere is “taqūlu: salām salām” (they say: Peace, peace). The alif in salām may well have been omitted in accordance with early orthographic practice, but this wording does not occur in the sources together with the word al-rabb (the Lord). (2) Transmitted by ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ahmad in his additions to al-Zuhd (1377), Ahmad ibn ‘Alī al-Marwazī in al-Jumu‘ah wa-Fadlihā (43), Abū Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah (2/205), and al-Bayhaqī in Shu‘ab al-Īmān (8864), through several chains from Abū al-Tayyāh, with this account. Ibn Abī Shaybah also transmitted it (36288) through Ghaylān ibn Jarīr from Mutarrif; its chain is sound. The author cited it in al-Rūh (1/11) from Ibn Abī al-Dunyā’s al-Qubūr, but it does not appear in the printed edition of that work. Al-Bayhaqī’s version is transmitted through Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. (3) No. 59 (Dār Atlas al-Khadrā’ edition), and in al-Qubūr, as cited in al-Rūh (1/9–10). Al-Bayhaqī also transmitted it through him in al-Shu‘ab (8861). Its chain includes an unnamed narrator, as well as Misma‘ ibn ‘Āsim, of whom al-‘Uqaylī says in al-Du‘afā’ (6/117): “He is not corroborated in his narration and is not well known as a transmitter.” See also Ibn Hibbān’s al-Thiqāt (9/198) and Mīzān al-I‘tidāl (4/112). Al-Dīnawarī transmitted it in al-Mujālasah (142/Mīm), through Shabābah ibn Sawwār, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from a man of ‘Āsim al-Jahdarī’s family, with this account. I have not been able to identify this ‘Abd al-Rahmān, and the man is unnamed, as in the preceding chain. (4) Sād and Jīm: “‘Āsim.”
