Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

who said:

“While I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a Jewish man requested permission to enter. He was admitted and said, ‘Death be upon you.’ The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, ‘And upon you.’”

She said (1): “I was about to speak.” She continued: “Then, on the second entry, he said the same, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, ‘And upon you’ (2). Then, on the third entry, he said, ‘Death be upon you all.’”

She said: “I replied (3), ‘Rather, death and Allah’s wrath be upon you, brothers of apes and swine! Do you greet (4) the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with a greeting that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has not used to greet him?’”

She said: “He looked at me and said, ‘Enough! Allah does not love foul speech or deliberately speaking foully. They said something, and we returned it upon them. It has done us no harm, but will remain upon them until the Day of Resurrection. They envy us for nothing as much as they envy us (5) for Friday, to which Allah guided us while they went astray from it; for the direction of prayer, to which Allah guided us while they went astray from it; and for our saying “Amen” behind the imam.’”

In the two Sahīh collections (6), Abū Hurayrah narrates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“We are the last, yet we will be the foremost on the Day of Resurrection, though they were given the Scripture before us and we were given it after them. This is their day, which Allah prescribed for them, but they differed over it, so Allah guided us to it. Thus, people follow us in this regard: the Jews tomorrow, and the Christians the day after tomorrow.”

(1) Sād and jīm read “qāla (he said),” which is an error. (2) The printed editions add after this: “She said: I was about to speak.” This addition appears neither in the manuscripts nor in al-Musnad. (3) Sād and jīm read “qāla qultu (he said: I said).” Kāf and ‘ayn read “fa-qālat qultu (then she said: I said).” The adopted reading follows qāf and mīm. Mīm-bā reads “qālat: fa-qultu (she said: then I said).” (4) The interrogative hamzah is missing from kāf. (5) Mīm, mīm-bā, and nūn read “hassadūnā.” (6) Al-Bukhārī (876) and Muslim (855/19, 21), from the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, cited earlier.
