Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

In a hadith narrated by Abū Hurayrah (1), the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“The sun neither rises nor sets on a day better than Friday. Every creature is seized with fear of Friday, except these two groups: jinn and humankind.”

This is an authentic hadith.

That is because it is the day on which the Hour will come, the universe will be folded up, this world will be destroyed, and people will be resurrected to their abodes in Paradise or Hell.

Twenty-eighth: It is the day that Allah reserved for this nation, causing the People of the Book before them to miss it. As narrated in al-Sahīh (2), Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“The sun has never risen or set on a day better than Friday. Allah guided us to it, while others went astray from it; thus, they follow us in this regard. Friday is for us, Saturday for the Jews, and Sunday for the Christians.”

In another hadith (3): “Allah reserved it for us” (4).

Imam Ahmad (5) said: ‘Alī ibn ‘Āsim narrated to us, from Husayn ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān, from ‘Umar (6) ibn Qays, from Muhammad ibn al-Ash‘ath, from ‘Ā’ishah

(1) Its sources were cited earlier (p. 410). This is Ibn Hibbān’s wording (2770). (2) All manuscripts except qāf and mīm read “al-Sahīhayn (the two Sahīh collections).” I did not find it in either collection with this wording. Rather, it was transmitted by Ahmad (10723), Ibn Khuzaymah (1726), and Ibn Hibbān (1726). Its chain of transmission is sound. (3) The word “ākhar (another)” is supplied from manuscripts qāf, mīm, mīm-bā, and nūn. (4) It was cited earlier in the hadith of Abū Mālik al-Ash‘arī transmitted by al-Tabarānī (3/298). It is weak because of Hāshim ibn Marthad al-Tabarānī and Muhammad ibn Ismā‘īl ibn ‘Ayyāsh. (5) No. 25029. Its chain includes ‘Alī ibn ‘Āsim, Ahmad’s teacher, who has some weakness as a narrator. No one else transmitted it in this full form. Ibn Khuzaymah (578, 1585) transmitted it with a sound chain, without the account concerning Friday and the qiblah (direction of prayer). (6) All manuscripts except mīm-bā read “‘Amr,” which is an error.
