Twenty-seventh: It is the day on which the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the seas, and all creatures are seized with fear, except the devils among humankind and jinn. Abū al-Jawwāb narrated [from] (1) ‘Ammār ibn Ruzayq (2), from Mansūr, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: Ka‘b and Abū Hurayrah met, and Abū Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“On Friday (3) there is an hour during which, if a Muslim servant asks Allah for good in this world and the Hereafter, Allah will grant it to him.”
Ka‘b said: “Shall (4) I tell you about Friday? When Friday comes, the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the seas (6), and all creatures are seized with fear of it (5), except human beings and the devils. The angels gather around the doors of the mosque, recording those who arrive in order, one after another, until the imam comes out. When the imam comes out, they roll up their scrolls. Whoever arrives thereafter comes to fulfil what is due to Allah and what (7) has been prescribed for him. Everyone who has reached puberty must take a ritual bath that day, as one does to purify oneself from sexual impurity. Charity given on that day is better than charity given on other days. The sun has never risen or set on a day like Friday.”
Ibn ‘Abbās said: “This is the account related by Ka‘b and Abū Hurayrah. In my view, anyone whose household has perfume should apply some of it (8) that day.”
