Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

in his place of prayer (1). He also stated that waiting for one prayer after another is among the deeds through which Allah erases sins and raises ranks, and that it is keeping vigil in Allah’s service (2). He further stated that Allah Most High expresses pride before His angels in those who have completed an obligatory prayer and remain seated awaiting another (3). This indicates that someone who offers the dawn prayer and then remains seated awaiting Friday prayer is better than someone who leaves and returns when it is due. The fact that the people of Medina and others do not do this does not indicate that it is disliked. The same applies to setting out for Friday prayer early, at the beginning of the day. And Allah knows best.

Twenty-fourth (4): Giving charity on Friday has a special merit over giving it on other days. Charity on Friday, compared with the other days of the week, is like charity in Ramadan compared with the other months. I witnessed Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah sanctify his soul—take whatever bread or other provisions he found at home when leaving for Friday prayer, and give them in charity discreetly along the way. I heard him say: “If Allah has commanded us to give charity before speaking privately with His Messenger

(1) Recorded by Mālik (441, 444) and al-Bukhārī (445, 659), from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him. (2) Recorded by Mālik (445) and Muslim (251), from Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him. (3) Recorded by Ahmad (6750) and Ibn Mājah (801), from Abd Allāh ibn Amr ibn al-Ās. The hadith is authentic. See al-Sahīha (661). (4) “Twenty-fourth” is repeated in all manuscripts except n. The error apparently occurred in the author’s original manuscript, and the numbering then continued on that basis to the end. Similar instances occur in his other works. See, for example, Tarīq al-Hijratayn (1/366). The Indian edition and others read “Twenty-fifth.”
