Zād al-MaʿādIbn al-Qayyim

be confined (1) to six subdivisions; whereas, if what is meant is the customary hours, then once the sixth hour ends and the seventh begins, the imam comes out, the scrolls are rolled up, and no offering is recorded for anyone thereafter. This is explicitly stated in Sunan Abī Dāwūd (2), in the hadith narrated by ʿAlī from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“When Friday comes, the devils go out early to the marketplaces with their banners, assailing people with distractions (3) and discouraging them from attending the Friday prayer. The angels also go out early and sit at the doors of the mosques, recording the man who has been there for an hour and the man who has been there for two hours, until the imam comes out.”

Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said (4): Scholars differed concerning these hours. A group of them said that he meant the hours beginning when the sun rises and shines brightly. In their view, going early to the Friday prayer at that time is preferable. This is the view of al-Thawrī, Abū Hanīfa, al-Shāfiʿī, and most scholars; all of them (5) recommend going early to it.

(1) In j and sm: “tatadammanu” (“includes”), a scribal corruption. (2) No. 1051. Also recorded by Ahmad (719) and al-Bayhaqī (3:220) through several routes from ‘Atā’ ibn Abī Muslim al-Khurāsānī, from the client of his wife, Umm ‘Uthmān, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib. The client of ‘Atā’s wife is unknown. Al-Albānī graded the hadith weak in Da‘īf Abī Dāwūd—al-Umm (9:399), and al-Hāfiz cited it in al-Fath (2:369). (3) From rabbathahu ‘an al-amr: to hold someone back from something and discourage him from it. In q and m: “bi-l-barābīth”; in k and mb: “bi-l-tarāthīth”—both are scribal corruptions. In n, this is followed by “aw al-rabā’ith” (“or distractions”), as in the Sunan. (4) In al-Istidhkār (5:9). The quotation continues, with adaptation, for several pages. See also al-Tamhīd (22:22). (5) “Kulluhum” (“all of them”) was omitted from the Indian edition and others. Shaykh al-Fiqī restored it but inserted “bal” (“rather”) before it, thereby distorting the sense. The al-Risāla edition does the same.
