two views as well. Those who held that its time is fixed differed over it, expressing eleven (1) views.
Ibn al-Mundhir (2) said: “We have transmitted from Abū Hurayra that he said: It is from daybreak until sunrise, and after the afternoon prayer until sunset.”
The second view is that it occurs when the sun passes its zenith. Ibn al-Mundhir reported this from al-Hasan al-Basrī and Abū al-‘Āliya.
The third is that it occurs when the caller to prayer gives the call for Friday prayer. Ibn al-Mundhir said: “This has been transmitted to us from ‘Ā’isha.”
The fourth is that it lasts from when the imam sits on the pulpit until he finishes. Ibn al-Mundhir said: “We have received this report from al-Hasan al-Basrī.”
The fifth view was stated by Abū Burda: “It is the hour Allah chose as the time for prayer.”
The sixth was stated by Abū al-Sawwār (3) al-‘Adawī. He said: “They held that supplication is answered between the sun’s passing its zenith and the beginning of the prayer.”
The seventh was stated by Abū Dharr: “It is between the time when the sun has declined (4) a handspan past the meridian and when it has declined a cubit.”
The eighth is that it lasts from the afternoon prayer until sunset. This was stated by Abū Hurayra (5), ‘Abd Allāh ibn Salām and Tāwūs.
